The only thing I disagree with you on is the race issue. Why does everything have to be about race? I watched the movie and the thought never even crossed my mind that there were black people or white people. I just saw people trying to survive (some maliciously). That’s it. We’ll make huge advances with the race issues if people would stop bringing it up. We’re all humans. Be it pre or post apocalyptic.

Mortensen has already done a FAR better job, with a much better script, and way more interesting costumes, on the same theme, in LoTR.

But then, that was a Europhilic, Christian writer named Tolkien. And the uruk-hai, and the Orcs were symbols for the ‘lesser races’ and everyone KNOWS it. And the good guys won, because they FOUGHT a battle to win.

This just sounds like an Oprah episode on steroids… or a Finnish winter.

Of course, Whites are in the spot we’re in today exactly because most don’t think racially, and couldn’t if their life depended on it, which it does.

If there is a future I think it will depend on Whites accepting the fact that they are the one and only race capable of producing genuine individuals for a reason.
Individuals are good for any group they belong to. And what they help us see above all is that the ocassional tensions between Group and Individual are in fact irresolvable. The only mistake in the past was in trying to resolve that tension one way or the other. It can’t be done, so it shouldn’t be tried, anymore.
All mythologies, theologies and ideologies have been redemptive and all have failed. And we’re talking about a redemptionism that extends as far back as the Paleolithic and certainly Neolithic age. That’s long enough.

One way of looking at the Apocolypse is to see it as the flip side of Utopia.
The inevitable result.
But, for the most part, Redemptive Societies don’t produce Individuals, they produce Charismatic Personalities.
I think that if we do have a future it’s leaders will know a thing or two about
genuine Alienation, and Anti-Redemption, and that the paradox of their leadership will be to inspire those they lead to move the focus away from Personalities and on to Principles, where they belong.

In the meantime, however, we’re probably going to get something pretty close to what Mr. Lynch describes in his review.
