I thought the lesbian theme to be highly contrived for a Texas small town, and I find any on-screen portrayal of black-white relationships highly distasteful. But yes, you are correct, the ways in which these plot elements were handled were better than average.

I’m not clear on what your critiques are in #6. Are these two themes each too random? Is the coach pointlessly lesbophobic or insufficiently political? Isn’t the portrayal of a black parent’s opposition to interracial dating a long-overdue corrective to the pretense that only Whites do this?

This is a great column. The book the show is based upon is even better. Way better! I’ll have to check out this show.

Steve Sailer wrote a great column on High School Football and the Jena 6. I can’t seem to find it, but it would be worth posting on TOQ as well, in conjunction with this fine article.

Without sports, Black people have no positive images in America. Not one.

Good point Scott. Growing up in Eastern Europe, my parents were surrounded by people, that looked and acted the same as them. There was no reason to point out the obvious. Nobody spoke in terms of their own white identity, because they didn’t have to, it was plain as day.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we lived in our own white country, and we would not even have to think about racial issues such as what’s in Friday Night Lights.
