In Hungary, Far Right is Making Gains

Komarom, Hungary — The right-wing demonstrators have gathered here on the fringe of a long-lost empire, near the border with Slovakia, the banks of the Danube, along rusting train tracks that stretch northwest to Vienna.

They wear wraparound sunglasses, leather vests and combat boots; and they knot around their necks the red and white striped flags reminiscent of Hungary’s pro-Nazi party of the 1930s and ’40s.

Take your guns in your hands,” rasps a singer. “This is the last fight we’re going to win. Endurance.”

And then: “I may have big boots. You may throw a stone at me. But this is still my country, this is where my cradle lay.

The crowd has gathered in the September sunshine for the main attraction, Gabor Vona, a charismatic young nationalist who heads Hungary’s newest, fastest growing and most controversial political party — and founded its affiliated militia.

Gabor Vona

Vona steps out of a minivan, a slight young man with a few shoots of gray in a crop of dark hair. A passing driver leans furiously on his car horn, and the young woman in the passenger seat shows Vona her middle finger as they careen past. Vona blinks and turns away with indifference. He’s ready to face his fans.

“You should know that Hungarian policy may change in the very near future,” he tells them. “Everyone knows that for the past 20 years we kept silent and bowed down, but this will change.”

Vona is riding high these days. His radically nationalistic party, Jobbik, picked up nearly 15% of the Hungarian vote in June elections for the European Union parliament. The Hungarian Guard, the paramilitary organization founded by Vona and his party and distinguished by its Nazi-like iconography and menacing marches through Roma, or Gypsy, areas, is locked in conflict with police and courts. . . . 1. One exceptionally case, pushed under the cover by the mainstream compulsive and professional lairs in both countries (Romania and Hungary), is that of a blue eyed blond 6 ft 11 in Romanian handball player named Marian Cosma killed by 5 gypsies in Veszprem Hungary. Brief moment when Romanians and Hungarians felt the same outrage against the organized gypsy mafia and maybe we’ll be able to unite against the same enemy.

Unfortunately, Magyar Garda displaying the greater Hungary map, makes a huge damage to the idea of white nationalism. Against whom are they fighting? Against the gypsy mafia or against their white neighbors Romanians, Slovakian and Serbs?

Magyar Garda in my opinion has nothing to do with the white nationalism or ethnocentric idea. It is just another Hungarian movement tributary to a supposed imperial glory. Something like the Hungarian people should dominate every neighbor and their neighbors should accept it as fourth class tolerated non-citizens as before 1918.

I know that many nationalist and conservatives think that Austria-Hungary empire kept some order in the Balkans (extending this now pejorative name to the entire Central Europe) – the most remarkably case is that of Patrick J. Buchanan (only to prove their lack of knowledge regarding the European history). The most outrageous thing is that along with the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire is the main responsible for the enmity between the central European peoples and the so called “balkanization”. The Balkans have been balkanized due to the imperial interests.

The most dangerous and crooked kind of gypsies in Romania is the so called Gabor gypsies. They were brought in Romania by a Hungarian count named Bethlen Gabor in order to dilute the Romanian factor in Transylvania. This is what an empire does. Denationalize, denationalize, denationalize.

When the empire falls, start writing myths about how en-lighted the empire was! God forbid acknowledging the past mistakes and crimes.

To conclude this bitter and too long post:
    - is white nationalism the idea that every European people should live peacefully and in freedom in it’s ancestral land?
    - is white nationalism that the European peoples should defend together against of this “rising tide of color”?
    - is it that the state should defend the people and do only what is good for the ethnicity that named the country and created the state?

If it is not the project is doomed.

Magyar Garda are not nationalists. Imperialists yes, nationalists not. If this is not understood the entire project is undermined and we are back in 1784, 1821, 1848, 1918 or 1940. At least in Central Europe, at least.

No more brother wars, but Magyar Garda wants foreign lands decrying Trianon. That their neighbors were fed up with Hungarian national and social exploitation. And probably, most of all with all the Hungarian mythology. This is what determined the WWI and nothing else.
