“70 Years After—Did Hitler Really Want War?”

On Sept. 1, 1939, 70 years ago, the German Army crossed the Polish frontier. On Sept. 3, Britain declared war.
Six years later, 50 million Christians and Jews had perished. Britain was broken and bankrupt, Germany a smoldering ruin. Europe had served as the site of the most murderous combat known to man, and civilians had suffered worse horrors than the soldiers.
By May 1945, Red Army hordes occupied all the great capitals of Central Europe: Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Berlin. A hundred million Christians were under the heel of the most barbarous tyranny in history: the Bolshevik regime of the greatest terrorist of them all, Joseph Stalin.
What cause could justify such sacrifices?
The German-Polish war had come out of a quarrel over a town the size of Ocean City, Md., in summer. Danzig, 95 percent German, had been severed from Germany at Versailles in violation of Woodrow Wilson’s principle of self-determination. Even British leaders thought Danzig should be returned.
Why did Warsaw not negotiate with Berlin, which was hinting at an offer of compensatory territory in Slovakia? Because the Poles had a war guarantee from Britain that, should Germany attack, Britain and her empire would come to Poland’s rescue.
But why would Britain hand an unsolicited war guarantee to a junta of Polish colonels, giving them the power to drag Britain into a second war with the most powerful nation in Europe?
Was Danzig worth a war? Unlike the 7 million Hong Kongese whom the British surrendered to Beijing, who didn’t want to go, the Danzigers were clamoring to return to Germany.
Comes the response: The war guarantee was not about Danzig, or even about Poland. It was about the moral and strategic imperative “to stop Hitler” after he showed, by tearing up the Munich pact and Czechoslovakia with it, that he was out to conquer the world. And this Nazi beast could not be allowed to do that.
If true, a fair point. Americans, after all, were prepared to use atom bombs to keep the Red Army from the Channel. But where is the evidence that Adolf Hitler, whose victims as of March 1939 were a fraction of Gen. Pinochet’s, or Fidel Castro‘s, was out to conquer the world? . . . Read the whole article.

“The Russian defence ministry posted a potentially inflammatory essay on its website which claimed Poland resisted Germany’s ultimatums in 1939 only because it “wanted to obtain the status of a great power”.
“The lengthy diatribe, which is unlikely to be welcomed in Warsaw, also lashed out at Britain and France for giving the Poles “delusions of grandeur” by promising to intercede if the Nazis invaded.
“”Anyone who has been minded to study the history of the Second World War knows it started because of Poland’s refusal to meet Germany’s requests,” the statement read. “The German demands were very modest. You could hardly call them unfounded.””

Truth is stranger than fiction indeed!!!!!
The Munich conference of 1938 should have dealt with Danzig, as well as the likely breakup of the artificial “Czechoslovakia,” in addition to the Sudetenlands question. But I’m not convinced that this would have stopped Hitler’s quest for land in the east.
It’s one thing to go after Danzig, another thing to launch Operation Barbarossa in search of Lebensraum. The areas that Hitler coveted clearly went beyond Danzig. They contained millions of Jews, as well as Slavs unlikely to go along with German colonization plans. And there was no way this area could have been ethnically/racially cleansed of these “unassimilables” using civilized methods. It was the equivalent of a white ethnostate in America, the kind some readers here dream about, making the decision to invade Mexico. A fool’s errand, and one guaranteed to lead to, yes, barbarism.
Markus, RE Hitler’s attack on Russia, there is ample evidence that (1) Stalin was planning a massive attack on all of Europe, (2) that Hitler knew this, and (3) that Barbarossa was therefore justified: war with Stalin being inevitable, it was best to strike the first blow, because Germany and its allies needed every advantage that they could get. In the end, Hitler failed to destroy the USSR and half of Europe fell to Communism. But if Stalin had been able to strike first, perhaps the whole of Europe would have fallen. A salvific vision of greatness articulated by Himmler, as recounted in the memoir of Latvian Waffen-SS man Artur Silgailis:
“He (Himmler) then singled out those nations which he regarded as belonging to the German family of nations and they were: the Germans, the Dutch, the Flemish, the Anglo-Saxons, the Scandinavians and the Baltic people. ‘To combine all of these nations into one big family is the most important task at the present time’ (Himmler said). ‘This unification has to take place on the principle of equality and at that same time has to secure the identity of each nation and its economical independence, of course, adjusting the latter to the interests of the whole German living space. . . After the unification of all the German nations into one family, this family. . . has to take over the mission to include, in the family, all the Roman nations whose living space is favored by nature with a milder climate…I am convinced that after the unification, the Roman nations will be able to persevere as the Germans…This enlarged family of the White race will then have the mission to include the Slavic nations into the family also because they too are of the White race . . . it is only with such a unification of the White race that the Western culture could be saved from the Yellow race . . . At the present time, the Waffen-SS is leading in this respect because its organization is based on the principle of equality. The Waffen-SS comprises not only German, Roman and Slavic, but even Islamic units and at the same time has proven that every unit has maintained its national identity while fighting in close togetherness . . . I’m making some tentative comments after much lurking, and a good bit of supporting various WN, RR and revisionist press or conferences with my $, because I’m genuninely interested in the ideas. I’d describe myself as curious, sceptical, somewhat sympathetic, somewhat conflicted. I was hoping for a respectful counter-argument, which Greg, not you, supplied.

Welcome, Markus, to TOQ Online. I haven’t quite worked all the bugs out yet, but the goal of the site and the commentary/discussion is to be a place where sincere and open-minded people can feel comfortable exploring White Nationalism and related issues. I hope you will keep reading and keep posting.

Fair enough, my apologies Markus.
I think it is clear that Hitler had aggressive designs in Eastern Europe, against the Soviet Union. That really is not in dispute. Naturally, this agression would have come at the expense of the Eastern European peoples. But surely a relatively civilized German empire in the east would have been preferable to Soviet expansion to the west. WW2 was really about fighting the wrong enemy. That is really what Buchanan is arguing – and he is correct.
