Hunter Wallace on Why We Write
1) Why do I spend so much time writing about race?
2) Why do I vigorously defend White Nationalism?
3) Why do I hold such politically incorrect racial views?
I’ve been asked these questions many times over the years. The standard answer (I genuinely care about my race and ethny), while undoubtedly true, isn’t much in the way of an explanation. It only raises further questions.
I can say for certain that I am not motivated by the incentives that matter most to our critics. I care nothing for money or status. In eight years, I haven’t taken a cent from anyone to write about race. Philosophically, I consider myself an Epicurean; I enjoy worldly pleasures in moderation, but try to keep my material needs to a bare minimum. In contemporary America, there is no greater kiss of death to your social status than advocating and defending White racial consciousness. I’m innocent of those charges.
I don’t expect to be rewarded for my racial convictions (or see my enemies punished) in any afterlife. I’m not a religious man. I don’t believe in any transcendent level of reality (the supernatural) beyond the material world.
I’m not driven by irrational hatred of Jews or non-whites. Until a few years ago, I had never heard of the Jewish Question. Like most Southerners, Jews were nowhere on my radar screen and I took a dim view of anti-Semites. If Jews were pro-white, I wouldn’t have a problem with them. I don’t believe any particular race is necessarily good or evil, superior or inferior, moral or immoral; there are extraordinary individuals and retrogrades in any group, as the data clearly show. There are plenty of non-whites that I like or admire on a personal level. So that isn’t it.
To be honest, I don’t think I am driven by moral outrage either. If you have read my blog, you have probably noticed by now that (unlike our opponents) I don’t really use moral invective to skewer our enemies. We’re not the ‘forces of light’ clashing with the ‘forces of darkness.’ Jews and Christians tend to see us through this distorted and false moral lens of Semitic demonology. Any student of history knows that racial mores vary considerably across history and societies. There is nothing sacred about the anti-racist status quo (or profane about its predecessor). It was conjured into existence by the media within the lifetime of my grandparents.
If I had to explain my unique circumstances, I would point to my background, intelligence, and personality. I grew up in the Alabama Black Belt where whites already have the misfortune of being a minority in many counties. More specifically, I grew up in heart of Wallace Country where my racial and political views came naturally to me. The region has a tradition of white populist radicalism that stretches back almost two hundred years. Undoubtedly, I imbibed it at some point in my youth.
In 1837, white settlers illegally arrived in the region and began the expulsion of the Creek Indians from East Alabama. In 1856 – 1857, Jefferson Buford of Eufaula, Alabama (an otherwise gentle scholar) led a brigade of 415 radicals to Kansas where they gained renown as Buford’s Calvary by participating in the bloodiest of the border wars. In 1857 – 1860, Barbour County was a hotbed of secession (the most radical county in the state). It was here that John Shorter and his fellow secessionists plotted the destruction of the Union. In 1861, Shorter rode to Montgomery to be sworn in as Governor of the Confederate State of Alabama. From 1874 – 1876, the Redeemers violently overthrew Republican rule in Barbour County and disenfranchised Negro voters. In the 1890s, Barbour County was the epicenter of Alabama populism. Most famously, George Wallace in the 1960s and 1970s launched his various political crusades (for Governor of Alabama and later President of the United States) out of this area.
White racial consciousness, White Nationalism, understanding of racial differences, secession, populism, radical politics: given our peculiar heritage and inclinations, it all came very easily to me. I was born and raised in a milieu that was (almost) uniquely receptive to these ideals. Growing up, I never experienced any peer pressure to conform to anti-racism. In my local area, “democracy” translated into a stark choice between white supremacy or black supremacy. All politics were/remain racial politics. The ideal of a colorblind or post-racial society could not but look like a utopian fantasy in this environment.
Unlike many of my peers, I was smart enough to see through the lies about race in the mainstream media. Their fairy tales blatantly contradicted my own personal experience. I had a rare personality type (one that I suspect many intelligent racialists share) that inclined me to care far more about truth than social status.
I really think this was a decisive factor. The ‘conspiracy of silence’ in the mainstream media about the reality of racial differences struck me as an endlessly fascinating puzzle. I was naturally intrigued by it, spent years trying to figure it out, theorizing about it, and was finally sucked into the White Nationalist underground in the process.
That’s my honest and best answer: in my own small way, I am carrying on a tradition in a land that cares for nothing but progress. White Nationalism is the logical extension of the perspective that White interests (as opposed to universal liberal abstractions) should be promoted and defended. Unlike liberalism, it is a system that suits us and our descendants in the long term. The Occidental Quarterly has no peer as a gathering place for the most intelligent minds committed to our racial salvation. I’m genuinely honored and humbled to be allowed to participate.

I am a keen fan of your writings, and surely not the only one.
I agree with your belief that a rare personality type is common among white nationalists. My guess is that it is the INTJ personality type.
I am an INTJ and I believe that an individual’s political opinions should be rationally derived from his values, as conclusions are inferred from premises or axioms in methodical logic. If one is aware of his values, then his politics should be essentially self-evident. If, for instance, one desires to live in a safe neighborhood, in which he feels comfortable, with good schools, clean surroundings, increasing property values and low taxes that enable him to save for his kids college expenses, he should be disturbed by increasing numbers of section 8 housing recipients. For better or worse, values, and their treatment, vary considerably among the other personality types. If an individual’s need for status is ten-fold higher than any other value, for instance, he is probably a multiracialist in 21st century America.
My path to racial consciousness began several years ago after reading Patrick Buchanan’s: The Death of the West. While the demographic changes in the US and Canada were obvious to me at the time, I was not aware that Europe was also in danger. Like a person who learns he has a life-threatening illness, I have read much on the subject over the past 7 years, and I have developed opinions as to its causes. I draw the parallel to a life-threatening illness because I believe that both impulses are rooted in an instinct, or axiom, for self-preservation.
So why should we write about this? Because it is our civic duty. When faced with a deteriorating neighborhood, one’s best option is to seek greener pastures. However, we are running out of places to which we can flee. Advocating for good ideas and criticizing bad ones is very important at this time, until a critical mass of informed individuals arises and lobbies, peacefully and lawfully, for change. We are the early adopters of White Nationalism. We must peacefully persevere until it goes mainstream.
My own path to White Nationalism began after reading Buchanan’s The Death of the West back in 2001. I’ve written about that in the past.
Prozium,
What I find remarkable in your account is the way you’ve reached an intellectual position not unlike my own — despite the fact that I’m only half-American, that my identity emerged from the Irish-Catholic working class milieu of my native San Francisco, and that I was a revolutionary trade unionist for almost a decade.
You, anchored in a quintessential American/Southern tradition, and I, in my very different identity, have somehow arrived at a very similar convergence.
Could this be sign that the present interregnum will also be a period of future-shaping convergences of our sort?
The critical point is thinking in terms of White interests. It is the Rosetta Stone that unlocks almost everything else. There are various paths to this perspective; some more difficult than others. Insofar as racialists share this essential compass, a convergence of views usually follows. There is a substantial consensus that can be reasoned from and appealed to.
Prozium,
Thanks for your writings. It is encouraging that we have people with high verbal IQ among us.
But there is one point which seriously bothers me. Someone on the VNN forum asked a rhetorical question: “White Nationalsts, where are your leaders?” And someone replied: “Our leaders are writing redundant books…” This disquieting truth keeps coming back to my mind.
There are some who are trying to DO something. Harold Covington is desperately trying to move people to the Northwest. It seems to be right strategy as there is a zero chance to reform the USA so that it could represent not a fighting ground between ethnicities but a citadel of the White Race. Let me get a little bit personal. Are you going to get there? I could imagine a word among us: PROZIUM himself (or O’Meara) moved to the NW! It might hugely help with so much needed traction to force us finally to DO instead to TAP keyboards.
We almost got the Myth. Now we need physical efforts from the Mythmakers so that an ordinary man might say:” Gosh, these guys do really believe in their shit. Its time to follow them”.
All the best,
RF
RF,
These guys do really believe in what they say. Its time to follow them.
I don’t think the readers of Harold Covington’s novels need any more convincing. They aren’t sitting on the fence scratching their heads, they’re putting together assault rifles. Our Mythmakers have done their job. They are the only ones among us who work. What we need is the readers and listeners to get their ass in gear, and summon the courage to fight. If it isn’t time to fight yet, DONATE! Click on that yellow button at the end of the article and give a couple bucks.
I agree with your sentiment, but I don’t know what else we can expect out of our writers. Most of them work harder than you and I do, and make a lot less money. We the readers must spread their message and not allow their sacrifice to be in vain.
The major problem with the Northwest Homeland movement are the sheer number of West Coast liberals who already live there. White racial consciousness is also much weaker in the Northwest than the Southeast. PC has a stronger grip in Washington and Oregon than Alabama and South Carolina.
In 2004, White voters in Alabama voted to keep segregationist language in our state constitution. In 2000, when our state anti-miscegenation law was finally repealed, 40% of Alabama voters wanted to keep the ban. A majority of Whites in Alabama already want to deport every illegal alien from the United States. If I am not mistaken, we’re the most radical state in that respect.
A similar number of South Carolinians wanted to keep their anti-miscegenation law in 1998. What’s true of Alabama and South Carolina must hold in Louisiana and Mississippi. There are millions of White Southerners who still hold traditional racial attitudes, but no organization on the ground even trying to get them involved in White Nationalism.
I think the Southeast has more potential than the Northwest as a White homeland. The League of the South already has a secessionist movement on the ground. There has been a lot of anti-government rhetoric in the region lately in response to the Obama administration, but so far most of it has been diverted into the usual conservative channels.
A tipping point might come when changing racial demographics in the Southwest render conservative national politics electorally untenable. How will Southerners respond permanent minority status under tax-and-spend Democratic administrations? We’re already getting a small taste of that now.
