Traditionalism, Youth Music Subcultures, & White Nationalist Metapolitics

derblutharschIn his new article, “Apoliteic music: Neo-Folk, Martial Industrial and ‘metapolitical fascism’” (Patterns of Prejudice 43, no. 5, December 2009, pp. 431-57), Anton Shekhovtsov suggests that there are two types of radical right-wing music that are cultural reflections of the two different political strategies that fascism was forced to adopt in the ‘hostile’ conditions of the post-war period.

While White Noise music is explicitly designed to inspire racially or politically motivated violence and is seen as part and parcel of the revolutionary ultra-nationalist subculture, he suggests that ‘metapolitical fascism’ has its own cultural reflection in the domain of sound, namely, apoliteic music [employing a concept from Julius Evola -- TOQ Editor]. This is a type of music whose ideological message contains obvious or veiled references to the core elements of fascism but is simultaneously detached from any practical attempts to realize these elements through political activity. Apoliteic music neither promotes outright violence nor is publicly related to the activities of radical right-wing political organizations or parties. Nor can it be seen as a means of direct recruitment to any political tendency.

Shekhovtsov’s article focuses on this type of music, and the thesis is tested by examining bands and artists that work in such musical genres as Neo-Folk and Martial Industrial, whose roots lie in cultural revolutionary and national folk traditions.

Very interesting. This music had an extremely powerful effect on me so I’d certainly like to see what this fellow has to say about it.

For any collectors out there there is even a CD of music dedicated to Baron Julius Evola titled ‘Cavalcare le Tigre: Centenary’ that would most certainly fit the bill of what is described in this article!

Here is a youtube link to some of it:

Also there is some band called Ostara that has a song called ‘Ride the Tiger’ that would seem to be a perfect ‘one song’ encapsulation of what the Original Post is about and would seem to be relevant. (also I just happen to like it, it certainly has some Alternative Rock vibe to it and I could certainly listen to this alongside Morrisseys immortal ‘National Front Disco’!!)

  3. Where is that picture from?

    • The image is the cover to Der Blutharsch’s Der Gott, der Eisen wachsen ließ (1999).Der Blutharsch is in my opinion the best of the military-industrial/neo-folk genre. See their website: http://www.derblutharsch.com/. My favorite of their albums is Der Sieg des Lichtes ist das Lebens heil, available here.

  4. The first Martial Industrial/Neo-Folk I heard was Von Thronstahl and since it’s a genre I don’t invest too much time with [I'm mostly a metalhead] they’re still my favourite. Saying that I haven’t heard Der Blutharsch before, methinks I’ll chem ‘em out now, ta for the links Greg.

The article was very informative though written by a Griffinbot; I still can’t believe how people worship his palingenetic populist ultra-nationalism formula… ah that’s the academy for you. I did a course last semester, Fascism and Antifascism and Griffin wasn’t used once, so a minor victory.

The whole apoliteic formulation too is misleading. For starters these artists have not completely ‘retreated into themselves’; they’re out their making music and performing live! Also, it’s not like they’re writing coded lyrics that only those in the know understand. For instance check out this interview of Von Thronstahl: http://www.heathenharvest.com/article.php?story=20051207145142661 .

  5. Youth music subcultures.. Amazing :)
